February 23 - Puerto Montt

It' going to be a quiet day today as we have nothing planned and no great ideas for adventures.  We hop the local bus to Puerto Montt.  It's the largest city in the area and is a port serving the area to the south.  A lot of the goods that go to southern Chile pass through here.

That said, there's not a lot of tourist attractions here - and it's Sunday to boot so things are quiet.  Here's a shot of the bus terminal from the water side (it's right on the water).  A couple of things to note:
-Somebody pitched their tent here and got away with it (Laura isn't interested)
-The banos are expensive (350 Cp a 'shot,' if that's the correct term).

This is another engineering photo.  This burned out building interested me because of the concrete roof trusses.  Never seen them before.

The town cathedral.  Wooden structure again, with a copper roof.

Inside.

A few of the local markets were open.  Most of them are in tents.  This one was a bit unusual in that it was this collection of old, ramshackle looking houses, many of which had some sort of shop on the bottom.  Unfortunately, the bright orange bins were full of fishy smell.

Laura wandering about the streets of this market.

JD, a loom in one of the other markets.  Looks pretty basic to me.

So, that was about it for  a quick tourist look at Puerto Montt on a Sunday.  Not much going on.

Back in Puerto Varas we decided to have Sushi for dinner (there's a Sushi joint in most towns).  Two of the rolls were pretty standard, wrapped in Nori and unwrapped in rice.  The other two were interesting - one was dipped in tempura batter and deep fried and the other was wrapped in thinly sliced avocado.  They were all good, as was the wine.

I heard it's snowing at home today.  Our weather wasn't that great, either - the sun didn't come out until 3 pm :)
