So, this is what we are doing this year. No bikes, we will be busing it. I'm leaving January 10 for Santiago. Laura will leave February 8th. This gives her back more time to get better. We'll be back in mid - March.
I land in Santiago and will spend the first 3 nights in a B&B we've already booked. Then I intend to head south and hope to get to a national park called Torres del Paine and do some hiking. Whether I bus there or fly will depend on my mood. Actually, I'll probably fly - it's 3100 km from Santiago to Punta Arenas.
It's not great, but the map to the left shows Chile and Argentina. Santiago is about the centre of Chile. Near the bottom is Peurto Natales (just above Punta Arenas). That's the nearest town to Torres del Paine park. Above that I marked the approximate location of Mt. Fitzroy - it's in Parque Nacional los Glaciers. Click on the map to get a better view of it. I'll try to get some better maps as we go along.
That's about it for now. I've been trying to learn Spanish but will have to depend heavily on finding people who can speak English. One phrase I'll probably have to use a lot: "Estoy perdido. Ayúdame, por favor." (I'm lost. Help me, please)
